The National Flag of North Korea

History and Design

The national flag of North Korea was adopted on July 10, 1948, and is officially defined in Article 170 of Chapter VII of the North Korean constitution. The flag consists of a central red band bordered by blue stripes at the top and bottom. At the center of the red band is a white disc with a five-pointed star inside. The disc and star are located closer to the hoist side of the flag.

Symbolism

The red color of the flag represents the revolutionary spirit and the blood shed by the Korean people in their struggle for independence. The blue stripes at the top and bottom of the flag symbolize the sky and sea surrounding the Korean peninsula. The white disc and five-pointed star represent purity and the socialist ideology of the government. The disc is also seen as a representation of the sun.

Adoption and Use

The flag was introduced in 1948 when the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) was proclaimed. It has been used as the national flag of North Korea ever since. The flag is flown on all government buildings and is used at official ceremonies and events. It is also used by North Korean citizens as a symbol of national pride.
